It led to a shortage of Nvidia's chips as companies raced to incorporate similar generative AI technologies into their products. Amazon's own Trainium2 chips are built for training AI models, including the sort that AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and its competitors run on. More than 50,000 AWS customers are already using Graviton chips, Amazon said. Finally, as part of its deepening relationship with Nvidia, AWS said it will operate more than 16,000 Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, which contain Nvidia GPUs and Nvidia's Arm-based general-purpose processors. AWS didn't announce release dates for virtual-machine instances with Nvidia H200 chips, nor instances relying on its Trainium2 silicon.

The U.K. government said Wednesday that it will invest £225 million, or $273 million, into an artificial intelligence supercomputer, highlighting the country's ambition to lead in the technology as it races to catch up to the U.S. and China. The University of Bristol will build the supercomputer, called Isambard-AI after the 19th century British engineer Isambard Brunel. The announcement coincided with the first day of the U.K.'s AI safety summit, which is being held in Bletchley Park. The computer will pack 5,448 GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips, powerful AI chips made by U.S. semiconductor giant Nvidia , which specializes in high-performance computing applications. The U.K. government hopes the two combined supercomputers will achieve breakthroughs in fusion energy, health care and climate modeling.

Nvidia achieved a market cap above $1 trillion for the first time on Tuesday. Nvidia's latest leg up was driven by a series of new AI products and partnerships announced over the weekend. Nvidia rose as much as 7.7% to $419.38 on Tuesday, giving it a market cap of $1.036 trillion and making it the first chipmaker to touch a $1 trillion market capitalization. Shares finished the day higher by 3% at $401.11, logging a market cap of $990 billion. Shares of Nvidia soared last week after the company's first-quarter earnings and second-quarter guidance trounced analyst expectations.
